Courtney Humphries, PhD

I am a writer, journalist, educator, and interdisciplinary environmental researcher interested in the how we navigate science, nature, and society in a changing climate and an urbanizing world. Building on a career as a widely published science writer, my scholarly and public writing focus on the intersection of people and the built environment. I have a masters degree in science writing from MIT and I’m a former Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT. I have a PhD in environmental sciences from University of Massachusetts Boston, where I trained in transdisciplinary approaches to addressing coastal issues through its NSF-funded Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT). I have taught interdisciplinary courses at Boston College in environmental studies and journalism, and am teaching environmental communication at Smith College in 2026. I'm the author of Superdove: How the Pigeon Took Manhattan....And the World, a natural history of pigeons published by Smithsonian Books, which was acclaimed in the New York Times Book Review. My upcoming book, Climate Change and the Future of Boston with Anthem Press, provides a detailed study of the city’s challenges and opportunities in addressing climate change. I often speak about urban climate issues in Boston and beyond, and am interested in speaking, writing, and collaborative opportunities. You can find more writing at my new Substack newsletter, The Nature We Make.
