Courtney Humphries, PhD
I am a writer, journalist, educator, and interdisciplinary environmental researcher interested in understanding and improving urban environments. I’m a widely published science journalist with a masters degree in science writing from MIT and I’m a former Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT. I have a PhD in environmental sciences from University of Massachusetts Boston, where I was an NSF-funded Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) fellow. My new book, Climate Change and the Future of Boston, published with Anthem Press in 2026, provides a detailed study of the city’s challenges and opportunities in addressing climate change. I have taught interdisciplinary courses at Boston College in environmental studies and journalism, and am teaching environmental communication at Smith College in 2026. I'm also author of Superdove: How the Pigeon Took Manhattan....And the World, a natural history of pigeons published by Smithsonian Books, which was acclaimed in the New York Times Book Review. I often speak about urban climate issues in Boston and beyond, and am interested in speaking, writing, and collaborative opportunities. You can find more writing at my Substack newsletter, The Nature We Make.
